Do you have a personal icon? I have. Not many but a few. We are talking about street photography.
I think it is important that you have one or a few personal icons to measure yourself against.
You have to show them too. Publish them. The time has gone when you could expect a helping hans. An uncle flying in from New York promising to set things up.
If for no one else, publish your icons for yourself. Nothing ever gets a status by dwelling in your machine. Publishing is part of the experience, and learning process, that we are in. All of us. And always.
Yes, having personal icons is implied in one of the seven in The Seven Ups. That too.
This simple photograph is shot in Gassin in the south of France about ten years ago. Long before I knew that there was something called street photography. But I had heard of HCB.
Looking back on this, I think it works ok. I saw the shadows on the opposite wall and I liked the tunnel of the alley. Something could happen?
So I waited. And these kids came along with their parents a few paces ahead. The boy stopped as he did not want to disturb the picture. He tried to get his kid sister out of the way.
In stead of disturbing the picture, they made the picture.
