Remember the song do you?

Song by Cilla Black: What is it all about, Alfie?

It is a long time ago, but sometimes it is good to look back to get a better grip of the future.

Sounds paradoxical?  It isn’t.

People without history have no future. You cannot possible know where to go if you don’t know where you are coming from. How, for instance, would you know that you are not going backwards?

Same with photography and with our special point of view: street photography. It is just another view of the world. No big deal, really.

What is it all about takes us back to a certain beginning of photography. Let us look at it briefly.

It definitely has to be about framing. A street photograph is a cut out of the world. Normally a rectangle or a square.

Frames have borders. There are inside and outside the frame. Here concerns us the inside only.

Inside you work with light. So there is light.

Light come in waves and you can arrange waves. That is called craftsmanship or even talent.

You can arrange both sides and you get to deal with balance. You can arrange it front and back and you get to deal with perspective; you can arrange it big and small and out get to deal with volume and form; you can arrange it all at once and you get to work with visual dynamics; you can deal with it any way you like want and you get to deal with photography.

The song is great. What is it all about, Alfie? You should try it.

When Cilla Black made the recording with Burt Bacharach in Abbey Road Studios in London, it took 32 takes.

That is what it is all about.
